A major traffic change going live at one of the busiest intersections in Phoenix. Crews installed a new flashing yellow-turn arrow signal, at 7th Avenue and Roosevelt Street.
A flashing yellow arrow means left turns are allowed, after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
The City of Phoenix says it they could add the same type of flashing arrows to other intersections if this one is effective.
"This is the first one for Phoenix, however it’s not new,” says Monica Hernandez. “It’s being used in other cities and really we're not reinventing the wheel here. It's a proven technology being used throughout the country, and we're starting here first and going to see where else it make sense to apply this type of approach.”
The Federal Highway Administration says this type of flashing yellow-turn arrow signals can reduce left-turn crashes by as much as 20 percent.
