PHOENIX — Phoenix police say a suspect shot by officers Wednesday has died.

The shooting was called out around 10 a.m. near the area of 19th Avenue and Monroe.

Police say officers were in the area looking for a suspect in a string of shootings overnight when they came across the vehicle stolen by the aforementioned suspect.

A source allegedly told police the suspect "frequented" a motel in the area of 20th Avenue and Van Buren. Police searched the area and say "a person matching the suspect's description" ran from officers into the motel.

Police say they "made contact" at the door of one the motel rooms when the suspect ran through one of the rooms, jumped out the window on the other side, and continued through several yards by hopping fences.

Police say the suspect grabbed a vehicle from an auto business near 19th Avenue and Monroe but ended up partially backing up into the parking lot.

Phoenix tactical officers moved toward the stopped vehicle and gave orders, but police say they were not followed. Officers fired less lethal ARWEN rounds and gas at the suspect, but he did not comply, police say.

As the suspect got out of the stolen car, police say he still not did comply with their orders. A SWAT officer fired at the suspect, and with the assistance of a K9 officer, the suspect "went down."

The suspect, 30-year-old Henry Wayne Rivera, was taken to the hospital where he later died. No weapons were found at the scene.

Police determined the man was not the suspect they were looking for, though they say he did have outstanding warrants for his arrest.
