PD: Unlicensed teen driver hits, kills pedestrian in Phoenix

Phoenix police say an unlicensed teenage driver hit and killed a pedestrian on Sunday night. 

According to officials, the crash occurred around 8 p.m. in the area of 7th Avenue and Roeser Road. 

Police say the driver, a 17-year-old without a license, was traveling eastbound on Atlanta Avenue at a high rate of speed and struck a man as he was crossing the street. The man has since been identified as 52-year-old Samuel Flores.

Fire crews pronounced Flores dead at the scene. There is no word on whether he was in a crosswalk at the time of the crash. 

Police say the driver stayed on scene and did not show any signs of impairment.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information has been released. 

According to a February report from the Governors Highway Safety Association, Arizona has the highest rate of pedestrian deaths in the nation.
