Police say a confrontation inside the emergency room at St. Joseph’s Hospital led to a shooting in the parking lot Thursday afternoon.

According to Phoenix police, a 19-year-old man tried to confront two other men for an unknown reason inside the ER, but the teen suspect was eventually stopped by hospital workers around 2 p.m.

Two hours later, the two men left the hospital and encountered the suspect in the parking lot where he pulled out a knife and a fight ensued. During the fight, a vehicle drove by and a passenger inside opened fire on the two victims.

One of the victims was shot in the leg and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect armed with the knife fled the area on foot but was caught moments later by an off-duty officer working at the hospital. That suspect's identity hasn't been released.

Police believe there were two men inside the burgundy vehicle that fled the scene and have not yet been located.

It is unclear at this time what led to the initial altercation inside the hospital.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department or Silent Witness at 480 - WITNESS.
