Phoenix City Council to talk drones, liquor

Phoenix City Council will be discussing two big issues when they meet at City Hall on Wednesday.

One involves flying drones within city limits. This is the third time council members will meet to address the ordinance.

Under the new proposed measure, drones would be allowed to fly in Phoenix for things like deliveries, aerial mapping and news gathering.

They would not be allowed to fly near jails, airports, big sporting events or other high-profile events.

Council members met in December to discuss the measure but they voted to continue that discussion to January 20.

They'll also be discussing a measure that allows businesses to sell alcohol near churches and schools.

A state law prohibits alcohol be sold within 300 feet of schools or churches. But the city has found a way around that.

The city created what's called an entertainment district. It's an area where businesses can sell booze even if it is near schools or churches. That measure has already passed and affects more than 20 schools and churches.

But they want to add new language to the already passed measure. It would tack on more requirements for bars and liquor stores.

Council members are expected to meet at City Hall at 2:30 pm. Count on ABC15 for updates.
