DAYTONA BEACH, FL — A Phoenix man is recovering after being bitten by a shark in Florida Saturday afternoon.
49-year-old William Angell was bitten on the right thigh around 4:30 p.m. while he was boogie boarding at New Smyrna Beach, according to Captain Andrew Ethridge with Volusia County Beach Safety. New Smyrna Beach is a city located just south of Daytona Beach.
According to International Shark Attack File, New Smyrna Beach is the shark attack capital of the world. It is estimated that anyone who has swam there has been within 10 feet of a shark, according to National Geographic.
Angell was treated at the scene and later drove himself to the hospital to seek additional treatment, said Ethridge.
The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.
