PHOENIX — Police are investigating a shooting that left two people dead near 19th and Myrtle avenues.

Officers were called to the home early Wednesday morning for a welfare check on residents. While there, officers heard gunshots from inside an apartment.

As the officers approached the door they say a victim walked out with a gunshot wound. They attempted life-saving measures on her and were alerted that the suspect was still inside, armed with a gun, and that two children were also inside.

The officers were able to find the children and get them to safety.

Authorities say the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Johnny Watson, locked himself inside. A few hours later, he was found inside, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

The first victim, identified as 36-year-old Janine Lily, was taken to a hospital where she was also pronounced dead.

Details of what led up to the shooting are unclear.

Phoenix police say this is an active investigation and will provide more details as they become available.
