PHOENIX — Phoenix police officers were involved in a shooting near 43rd and Southern avenues Wednesday morning.

The shooting happened around 9 a.m. in a neighborhood along 43rd Avenue near Alta Vista Road.

Officials say police were following a vehicle while working a separate investigation.

At some point, a man got out of the vehicle and began hopping fences in a neighborhood. Officers followed the man until he stopped in front of a house.

Officials say the man pulled out a firearm and pointed it at officers. That's when the officer-involved shooting occurred.

The man was not struck by the officers' gunfire.

Police say the man proceeded to hold the gun to his own head for two hours until officers were able to get him into custody.

No officers were injured in this incident.

Officers eventually tracked down the vehicle the man came out of and detained two women who were inside. One of the women has since been let go.

Police have identified the suspects as Jesus Banuelos, 30, and Jennifer Covington, 42. They were booked into jail on numerous charges including aggravated assault on an officer and unlawful flight.

This incident is still under investigation.
