Phoenix police shot and killed a man north of downtown Phoenix on Tuesday morning.
The suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Alexandre J. Aldrich.
The incident occurred near Central Avenue and Osborn Road around 7:30 a.m. when officers responded to a trespassing call at a business.
Police say officers tried to handcuff Aldrich and a struggle ensued. Officers attempted to use a taser and "strike techniques" before the suspect fled with one handcuff placed on him.
Officers located Aldrich nearby, and he reportedly ignored their verbal commands, turning and raising his hand using the handcuff as a weapon, police said.
Police say an officer then shot the suspect. Officers attempted life-saving measures before fire crews transported Aldrich to the hospital. He has since been pronounced dead.
An officer sustained a minor knee injury during the initial confrontation with the suspect and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
This officer-involved shooting is the 43rd Valley officer-involved shooting in 2018.
