PHOENIX — Officers were involved in a shooting in Phoenix Wednesday morning.

Phoenix police were called to the hotel near Interstate 17 and Peoria Avenue after 6:30 a.m. Wednesday after a caller reported that their roommate at the hotel had "gone crazy" and fired a gun outside the hotel.

Police arrived at the scene and tried to make contact with a 24-year-old woman, later identified as Jovana Kelsey McCreary.

According to police, when asked if the woman had a weapon, she told the three responding officer that she did not.

Officers then discovered the woman had a misdemeanor warrant for her arrest, and found what were believed to be drugs inside her bag.

While trying to detain the woman, police say a struggle ensued and she tried to pull away while producing a handgun. The woman reportedly fired a shot and two officers returned fire, injuring the woman.

She was taken to the hospital for treatment, but has since been released and booked into jail on multiple charges. Charges include aggravated assault, resisting arrest, weapons misconduct, possession of dangerous drugs and a misdemeanor warrant.

No officers or others were injured during the incident.

Just four days ago, Phoenix police were involved in another shooting that resulted in the death of James Garcia, who was sitting in his car at the time. Phoenix police have only released a small snippet of body camera footage from this incident, after national attention and witness statements that Garcia was unarmed.
