PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department says at least one of its officers was involved in a shooting Tuesday night near 36th Street and McDowell Road.
Police say officers were called to the area around 6:30 p.m. for reports of a man firing shots into the air.
Officers were able to locate the suspect, identified Wednesday as 32-year-old Jesus Samuel Rodriguez, in a house nearby. Police say when officers approached the home, Rodriguez opened the door with a rifle in his hands. The officer ordered Rodriguez to drop the weapon, and police say he raised it toward police.
The officer, a 9-year veteran of the department, then fired at the suspect. Because of a metal screen door, Rodriguez was not directly hit and then began complying with commands.
Rodriguez was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that appeared to be from metal fragments and was released and booked into the 4th Avenue Jail.
Police say no officers were injured in the incident.
Rodriguez has been charged with aggravated assault on an officer, possessing a firearm while prohibited and firing a weapon in city limits, all felonies.
According to media reports, Tuesday's shooting was the 25th involving law enforcement in Maricopa County thus far in 2019.
**Editor's note: Phoenix police initially identified the suspect as Anastacio Pacheco when the shooting happened. He has since correctly been identified as Jesus Samuel Rodriguez.**
