A relative of one of the two men arrested in connection with a bank robbery and chase that ended in an officer-involved shooting last week says a story told to a judge isn't true.
Sergio Escobedo, along with Ruben Rodriguez, were arrested in Tempe after being chased from Avondale in connection with a bank robbery.
At a hearing before a judge, Escobedo said the robbery was an attempt to get money to pay for his mother's cancer treatments.
"Honestly, I'm over here trying to get the money for my mom for her chemotherapy," he said at the time. "She's already on stage four."
When reached Monday, Escobedo's godfather disputed what he told the judge, saying his godson's mother doesn't have cancer and his story was a ploy to get out of jail.
Escobedo faces two counts of armed robbery and two counts of aggravated assault on an officer for allegedly firing a gun at police during the pursuit.
A judge set his bond at $250,000 and according to online records, Escobedo remained in custody at the Fourth Avenue Jail as of Monday.
