Roadblock to youth health coverage lifted

Posted

The key sponsor of a measure restoring Arizona state-sponsored health insurance coverage to low-income children says she's confident the once-stalled legislation is again moving.

Republican Rep. Regina Cobb of Kingman says her bill unfreezing enrollment in what's known as KidsCare should appear on the House floor soon after it was pulled from a committee where it never got a hearing.

It still appears to have problems in the Senate.

Enrollment in coverage known nationally as the Children's Health Insurance Program Budget was frozen five years ago because of budget concerns. It once covered more than 63,000 children but there are fewer than 1,000 covered now.

Arizona is the only state currently without an active program. The federal government will pick up the full cost of the insurance at least through 2017.
