Looking to add a pet to your family? This Saturday, pet adoptions at Maricopa County Animal Care and Control are free.

The deal on May 5th is part of the "Empty the Shelter" event at both Maricopa County animal shelters and is good on all animals.

Jose Santiago with MCACC says emptying the kennels before summer is important because during summer months, they can take in anywhere from 1,100 to 1,200 dogs between both shelters. Freeing up room for more animals helps them save more lives of animals in need.

The free adoption includes anything the animal may need: vaccinations, surgeries, licensing and microchipping. Pets also come with a free leash and a collar.

If you're interested in adopting a pet, go online to see adoptable pets or check out both MCACC locations:

  • West Valley Animal Care Center: 2500 S. 27th Avenue, Phoenix. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • East Valley Animal Care Center: 2630 W. Rio Salado Parkway, Mesa. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

According to the MCACC website, they take in 35,000 cats and dogs each year.

In December, sources told ABC15 the county board approved $1.8 million for an architectural firm to look at workflow and animal housing for Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.

The shelter is reportedly planning an eventual upgrade at its West campus. As part of that, closing the East campus in Mesa is a possibility, although no final decision has been made.
