The Arizona Senate has given initial approval to a bill banning photo radar on state highways that will affect just two cities.
The bill by Republican Sen. Sen. Debbie Lesko of Peoria was approved by a voice vote with no debate Thursday. A formal vote approving Senate Bill 1241 is needed to send the bill to the House for action.
Her measure would only affect speed cameras in the communities of El Mirage and Star Valley. Lesko said her legislation is narrow in focus to increase the odds of it becoming law since the Legislature has repeatedly rejected statewide bans.
The Arizona League of Cities and Towns opposes the measure, saying the cameras slow down drivers in areas where police cannot safely pull them over.
