Vet 'left in dark' after VA cancels surgeries

A Valley veteran feels "left in the dark" from the latest setback at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care System hospital.

Mark Fina was supposed to go under the knife tomorrow for a knee replacement, but his surgery was canceled after the hospital's ventilation system broke.

Surgeries were postponed this past Wednesday for the rest of this week because of technical difficulties with the operation room ventilation system.

That affected 57 veterans, who were either rescheduled for surgery at the Phoenix VA or scheduled with community providers with the support of Tri West and the Veterans Choice Program.

VA officials say a thorough review of the operating room and its key mechanical and cleaning systems has been conducted. They say testing completed in the past few days indicates that the systems meet all established standards for safe patient care.

Surgeries will resume as normal on Monday, but Fina has no idea if he's supposed to go in or not.

We contacted the VA, but we're still waiting for them to track down any information on Fina's surgery.
