Phoenix police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who killed a woman in a wheelchair on 48th Street near McDowell Road in the early morning hours on Monday.
According to police, the woman was in her 60s. She was using her wheelchair in the bicycle lane along 48th Street, attempting to hop a curb and return to the sidewalk. Police said a pickup swerved into her from behind, killing her.
Police said a Good Samaritan tried to help the woman.
“She ran out into the street, to her credit, and started flagging traffic down so that our victim did not get hit again by another vehicle,” said Lt. Paul Taylor, with the Phoenix Police Department.
Police said finding the person who killed the woman is a priority.
“She was left here in the street to die with no medical aid from this driver, so we would like to get them into custody before they do something like this again,” said Taylor.
According to police, the driver will likely be in trouble for leaving the scene of a crash and could also face charges for manslaughter or homicide.
