Thief on the loose in North Phoenix

A north Phoenix neighborhood is on alert after a man was caught trying to break into a resident's home.

The incident happened around 6:53 a.m. Tuesday morning near Tatum and Union Hills Drive.

According to a Block Watch email, the homeowner says the man pulled up in their driveway and started ringing the doorbell and banging on the door and window.

When the homeowner didn't answer, the man broke in through the gate. When he saw the homeowner through the window, he grabbed their weed eater and took off.

The homeowner also reported the suspect also robbed several other cars in the neighborhood.

Phoenix police say the tactic the suspect used is nothing new. Crooks often ring the door bell and break-in when they think no one is home.

Authorities say people in the area should be on alert.

Report any suspicious activity and lock up. Make every attempt to make it look like you're home.

Clear any mail and flyers from your doorstep and if you can, post block watch and security system signs.
