PHOENIX — A suspect who prompted a police situation on Interstate 17 Monday afternoon was taken into custody on the freeway after he had opened fire on a Phoenix FBI Field Office building earlier in the day.

An FBI spokesperson said the man, later identified as Gabriel Arturo Manzo, 38, of Mesa, approached the office, near 7th Street and Deer Valley Drive, around 2 p.m. and fired several shots at the building and an employee who was exiting.

Officials said they are not aware of anyone being injured in the incident, and said at no point did the man gain access to the FBI building or grounds.

The shooter was later taken into custody without incident by Phoenix police officers and FBI agents in the area of I-17 and Durango.

It is unclear at this time what prompted the man to open fire on the building and shoot at the worker.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the FBI Phoenix Field Office at 623-466-1999.

The incident forced the closure of southbound lanes of I-17 Monday afternoon as authorities dealt with the suspect.

Manzo will have his initial appearance Wednesday with the United States Attorney’s Office to determine charges.

The FBI will not be providing Manzo's booking photo, per policy.
