Woman speaks out about separate freeway shooting

The Arizona Department of Public Safety has recovered the bullet from the car struck in Sunday’s shooting on Interstate 17 and Peoria Avenue. Investigators said they believe the shooting could have been an incident of road rage.

The case brought back memories for Aida De Luca, who said her husband was shot at on Dec. 23.

“I got the ABC15 alert on my phone so that prompted me to reach out to your station and say, ‘You know, I need to report this,’” she said.

De Luca said her husband’s freeway shooting scare happened around 2:30 p.m. near I-17 and Peoria Avenue, the same location of Sunday’s shooting.

She said they didn’t call 911 because her husband wasn’t injured, and, because of the holidays, she had trouble getting through to DPS. But she said they’re sure it was gunfire.

“It was a round hole, perfectly round, before the window blew entirely,” De Luca said.

DPS Capt. Damon Cecil said anyone who believes their car has been hit, should pull over as close to the scene as possible and call 911.

“We’ll have troopers come out that will initially investigate it. If it’s obvious it is a bullet, then we’ll call investigators out,” Cecil said.

“You don’t think it could ever happen to you,” De Luca said. “I was aware of those shootings, but when it happened to us, I was like, ‘No, it’s got to be something else.’”
