A driver is in serious condition after colliding with a Phoenix Police Department vehicle.

Police responded to the area of Vineyard Road and 35th Avenue around 4:30 a.m. Sunday on reports of a vehicle crashing into a police patrol car.

Police say an officer had stepped out of his patrol car to complete paperwork on a vehicle two when a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed collided into the unoccupied patrol car. The officer and witness were able jump out of the way. The officer was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons with minor injuries.

However, the driver of the vehicle who crashed sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital.

Police believe impairment is a factor.

The investigation is ongoing.

Drivers are being told to seek alternative routes.

Check traffic conditions.
