The finishing touches are all but done on the largest Head Start facility in the Valley, with administrators holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday morning.
The ceremony marked the full conversion of the former South Minister Presbyterian Church campus near 20th Street and Broadway Road into the complex which will house only Pre-K students.
More than 180 children will be enrolled in academics at Shellie's Early Start, as it is called, and will receive early learning and meals in an area where thousands of families live below the federal poverty level.
"My focus is really trying to make sure that kids get a great education and love," said Sandra Baumann, CEO of the program. "This is like a home base in the center [of Phoenix]."
Baumann said she's still looking to fill about 20 full-time positions and is hoping those who live nearby apply.
