Fire crews went on the defensive Sunday morning during a first-alarm apartment fire in Phoenix Sunday morning.

The fire broke out at an apartment complex near 35th Avenue and Buckeye Road, that turned out to be abandoned, after 6 a.m.

The building was fully involved with fire, but firefighters were able to quickly put out most of the blaze.

According to information on scene, the street was closed as fire crews worked the scene.

Phoenix Fire Captain Ardell Deliz says this time of year, it's not uncommon to see squatters and homeless subjects seeking shelter and making fires for warmth.

At this time, it's not clear whether this was the cause of the fire. Investigators are still working to determine the cause.
