PHOENIX — Police are investigating a shooting in which an officer of the Phoenix Police Department shot a man armed with a machete several times near 19th and Southern avenues Sunday afternoon.
Update: As of Friday, May 13, the man remains in the hospital. Officials say upon release from the hospital, the man will be booked.
Officials say police were responding to an unrelated call at a gas station around noon when they noticed a man standing in a field, waving a machete around and yelling in Spanish.
Police tried to talk to the man, but officials say the man continued "screaming irrationally" and waving the machete around.
Police say the man walked away from police and into the road.
Officers used less-than lethal rounds on the man while telling him to drop the machete.
Police say the man began advancing on officers and that's when one officer fired his gun at the man, striking him several times.
The man was shot at least once in the leg.
Officials say the man was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but has since stabilized.
No officers or bystanders were injured in this incident.
