Five people have been displaced after a house fire in west Phoenix.

The fire happened at a home near 63rd Avenue and Thomas Road around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Crews were able to contain the fire to the laundry room area of the house.

According to officials, a person of interest was seen on the roof of the house when firefighters arrived and was taken into custody.

"We don't think that he did it intentionally. We just think he may have been smoking something and it dropped," said neighbor Vera Davis

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

The family did not have any working smoke detectors because they remove all of them, according to authorities.
