PHOENIX — Westbound lanes of Interstate 10 were shut down at 51st Avenue for several hours after a serious crash early Monday morning.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, DPS says a single vehicle hit an attenuator, a barrier that controls traffic for the HOV ramp to State Route 202, causing the vehicle to travel across all eight lanes of traffic. The vehicle then hit a right shoulder wall.
A woman who was in the passenger seat suffered serious injuries. The driver, a 29-year-old Phoenix man, was booked into jail on DUI, aggravated assault and felony criminal damage charges.
His name was not released by DPS.
There was a lengthy backup in the area during the closure, but the freeway reopened around 7:30 a.m. Click here for current traffic conditions.
