PHOENIX — Phoenix Fire Department says a man has died after his fuel truck exploded early Tuesday morning.

The incident happened near 39th and Clarendon avenues after 5 a.m.

Officials say 40-year-old Miguel Ramirez was reportedly "on fire" at the scene. Ramirez was in extremely critical condition with burns to his head and face, officials say. He was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries.

Ramirez was reportedly filling up his diesel gas tanker truck when the fuel tanker exploded.

It's unclear what caused the tanker to explode.

The Arizona Department of Transportation and National Transportation Safety Board have been called in to help investigate.
