A mother and her young daughter are dead after a head-on crash Monday night south of Phoenix.

Phoenix police said a Honda Civic and a Buick Enclave hit head-on around 7:50 p.m. near 19th Avenue and Baseline Road.

Police said the driver of the Honda Civic was traveling eastbound on Baseline Road when she hit the curb, drove onto the sidewalk before returning to the road and into the westbound lanes.

The driver, 24-year-old Karimahi Overstreet, died at the scene, according to police.

Her three-year-old daughter was taken to the hospital with extremely critical injuries, where she died, police said in a Tuesday morning update. The girl was identified as Amaya McNiel.

The driver of the Buick Enclave was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. An update on his or her condition was not released Tuesday.
