Repairman fixes AC for free for family despite it not being covered by warranty

A west Phoenix family got a visit from an air-conditioning "angel" after getting the runaround from a home warranty company.

ABC15 first told you Ana Castro's story of her frustrations with Select Home Warranty Tuesday. With some convincing from ABC15 reporter Melissa Blasius, the company finally sent a technician to the home Thursday.

The family had suffered through eight days of heat over 100 degrees.

National home warranty companies like Select usually contract with local repair companies, which respond to policyholders' homes to assess and repair under the warranty.

When Edwin Gfellers arrived Thursday morning, he found the Castros needed a Freon leak repair, which likely would not be covered by their warranty.

Gfellers, who has 35 years experience, runs his own air conditioning repair company. He saw Ana Castro's frustration and tears as she tried to figure out how she would pay. That's when he offered to do the work for free. She tells ABC15 she was "shocked," and she called Gfellers an "angel."

"He's not getting anything out of this; he's just doing it from the heart," Castro said. "I want to tell him, 'Thank you for what you just did for me. I was not expecting this outcome.'"

When contacted by ABC15, Gfellers said he had not seen the prior ABC15 story about Castro's home warranty difficulties. However, he said he believes in "karma," and he said doing the right thing is better than making a buck.
