After 16 years as a Valley firefighter, a member of the Superstition Fire and Medical District is in the biggest battle of his life -- against cancer.
Crews tell ABC15 that Fire Engineer and Paramedic Jim Crowley was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma last October.
Fellow firefighter Andrew Tryon says Crowley’s current treatment isn’t working and soon he will need a bone marrow transplant. However, his coverage has been denied.
“Right now, workers compensation has denied his claim and our biggest fight is proving Jimmy actually got this cancer from an on-the-job injury," Tryon said.
Crowley has three children.
“You show up, and he has one of the biggest smiles on his face," Tryon said. “He loves talking about his family and his kids.”
On the weekend, crews will go over to help Crowley with landscaping and will bring him meals.
"We go into fires together," Tryon said. "We go on house calls together. We’re a crew. We’re a team, and we have each other's backs."
His fellow fighters have set up this GoFundMe page to help raise money for his legal fees and other expenses.
