Deputies with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office are investigating after human remains were found outside of Bagdad.
On Sunday morning, deputies responded to an area off Highway 93 to meet with a rancher who reported finding a human skull.
The rancher had also found bones that deputies later confirmed to be human, officials said.
Deputies conducted a search of the nearby area and located a campsite under a tree with clothing, a backpack and personal hygiene items.
Authorities say the items located at the campsite are likely connected to the human remains.
According to a YCSO spokesperson, the items were spread around and were only visible after they cut away sections of brush.
The items are being examined for identification efforts.
Deputies say it appears that animals had also disturbed the campsite.
