Transient's death near Apache Junction hiking trail believed to be heat related

A man in his 40’s was found unconscious in a desert area in Apache Junction this afternoon and was later pronounced deceased.

The Superstition Fire and Medical District says initial reports indicate the death was heat related.

The incident happened near Baseline Avenue and Goldfield Road around 1:15 p.m.

SFMD says they originally responded to a call of a hiker that was unconscious in the area. After further investigation, it was determined the person was a transient living in the area but was not hiking at the time.

The Apache Junction Police Department will continue to investigate the death.

The temperature in Apache Junction was 111 degrees at 2 p.m.

SFMD says this is a tragic reminder to stay indoors and hydrated in extreme heat conditions.
