An armed suspect was shot and killed by police Friday night in Chandler.

Chandler police say they were called to a home near Alma School and Warner roads around 5 p.m. for reports of an armed person experiencing a mental crisis.

According to a Chandler police spokesperson on scene, an acquaintance of the suspect called police after she arrived at the home and feared for the suspect's life. She said the man was threatening suicide and was armed with a gun.

Police say after officers arrived they attempted to talk to the suspect who then fired at officers as they approached. The officers were forced to take cover and call for backup.

As officers attempted to evacuate nearby residences, officials say the man went into the backyard and retrieved a rifle from a carport and fired at two officers who were approaching from the alley. Both officers returned fire, striking and killing the suspect.

The suspect has since been identified as 84-year-old Kay Kenniker.

No officers were injured.

This is the 68th officer-involved shooting reported in the Valley in 2018.
