Mid-decade census means millions for cities

Posted

If you live in certain Valley cities don't be surprised if you soon get a knock on the door. A knock that may be worth millions of dollars.

Starting October 1 seven Valley cities are participating in a special mid-decade census.

Buckeye, Chandler, Gilbert, Goodyear, Maricopa, Peoria, and Queen Creek are all participating.

Sam Andrea with the City of Chandler says Chandler is participating because they don't want to miss out on extra state and federal money.

"We've seen big growth here in Chandler since the last census," said Andrea.

"More than 14,000 new residents have moved into Chandler over the last few years and we really need them to participate in this census," said Andrea.

City officials say Chandler alone could miss out on as much as 14 million dollars if the census isn't accurately taken.

Officials say they can use that money for everything from street improvements to police and fire services.

More than 500 census workers will go door-to-door while conducting the census.

Officials have to be done by November 25.

The census survey is anonymous and confidential.
