CHANDLER, AZ — Police say a 17-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot by police in Chandler Saturday night.
Authorities say an officer was on patrol near Erie and Nevada streets when they attempted to pull over Anthony Bernal Cano for a traffic violation.
Police say Cano, who was riding a bike, refused the officer's commands and fled the scene. A short time later, police say Cano abandoned his bike and ran towards Gazelle Meadows Park near Nevada and Erie streets.
Officials say the officer pursued Cano on foot. While running through the park, Cano allegedly removed a gun from his waist and motioned towards the officer. The officer fired their weapon, striking Cano.
Cano was transported to the hospital in critical condition, authorities say.
Authorities say the officer, a five-year veteran with the force, was not injured and is on administrative leave, per standard practice.
Police say this is an active investigation. Stay with ABC15 for the latest information.
