A Chandler Police Department officer is recovering after he was shot with an arrow while responding to a call Wednesday night.

Police say around 9:30 p.m., dispatchers received calls and texts from 32-year-old Thomas Stephen Leeper threatening to shoot officers, family and himself.

Upon arrival to the home near McClintock Drive and Chandler Boulevard, officers learned that Leeper had shot at a family member with a bow and arrow. Leeper exited the house still armed with the bow and arrow, and shot one of the officers in the arm.

Officers used less-lethal impact munitions to take Leeper into custody. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and will be charged with aggravated assault on an officer and domestic violence-related charges.

Police say the injured officer was taken to the hospital for treatment and later released.

Police have had previous contact with Leeper -- he was arrested in 2016 after a string of arson fires in Chandler.
