The Gilbert Town Council has appointed Jenn Daniels as the Phoenix suburb's new mayor, replacing John Lewis following his resignation after seven years in office.

Daniels has served on the council since 2009, and she is uncontested in her candidacy for a four-year term as mayor in the town's Aug. 30 primary election.

Lewis stepped down to become president and CEO of the East Valley Partnership. His term was set to expire in January 2017.
