MESA, AZ — A 19-year-old woman was arrested after she allegedly hit a 55-year-old cyclist and fled the scene of the crash in Mesa Monday afternoon.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said they responded to a vehicle accident just after 4 p.m. near 98th Street and Broadway road.

Witnesses told authorities a black vehicle was driving in the area when it failed to yield at a stop sign and allegedly collided with a black motorized bicycle that was traveling on Broadway Road.

Sheriff officials said the bicycle rider, a 55-year-old man, was thrown from the bicycle when the crash happened.

The man was transported to Banner Desert Hospital with a life-threatening head injury.

Authorities said neighbors had recognized the vehicle which was eventually located in the driveway of a residence in the area.

The black Chevrolet Cobalt had damage that the sheriff's office believed to be consistent with the crash. Physical evidence was also found at the scene the connected the vehicle to the crash.

MCSO says 19-year-old Haley Dean was seen exiting the vehicle shortly after it was located.

Dean had allegedly initially made up a story about the damage to her car but authorities said she eventually admitted she was driving at the time of the crash.

Dean was arrested and faces one charge for leaving the scene of an at-fault traffic collision.
