Arizona State University is planning to open a satellite campus in downtown Mesa, a suburb of Phoenix.
Mesa Mayor John Giles on Thursday formally announced the plans during his State of the City address.
ASU already has a Polytechnic campus in east Mesa, but University President Michael Crow said in a prerecorded video that the school plans to grow its presence in the city.
The Mesa City Council is expected to vote on a memorandum of understanding in late February, which would set a deadline for the next phase of talks about the expansion's specific site, academic offerings and financing.
