MESA, AZ — Mesa police say a man turned himself in after a weekend homicide and police took him into custody.
Police say Jesse Hernandez, 24, turned himself into Phoenix police officers around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, saying he was involved in a shooting in Mesa. About two hours earlier, officers had started investigating a homicide at an apartment complex near Main Street and Dobson Road.
The victim, later identified as Khalil Evans, suffered life-threatening injuries and later died at the hospital.
According to a release from the Mesa Police Department, Hernandez told detectives he was at the scene, possessed a firearm and fired it during the incident. Police say he was visiting his estranged wife and Evans was his brother-in-law.
Hernandez told police Evans approached him as he was leaving and asked if he had a missing key. Detectives were able to recover the handgun used in the homicide.
Hernandez has been charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of misconduct involving weapons.
