A 24-year-old man was arrested early Thursday morning after reportedly attempting to set an Arizona Department of Public Safety vehicle on fire.

According to Mesa Police, DPS troopers were eating at a Whataburger near Dobson and Broadway roads in Mesa when a trooper noticed a man near one of their marked vehicles.

The suspect, identified as Osvaldo Oregel, reportedly rolled up a newspaper, opened the gas tank and lit the paper on fire. The fire did not fully ignite, but there was some damage to the car near the gas cap and tank.

No one was injured.

Police say Oregel admitted to trying to set the trooper vehicle on fire with the paper and lit cigarette. He was booked into jail on one felony count of arson.

Police say the man told them he was involved in an argument with his girlfriend; officials believe the man may have been on drugs at the time of the incident.
