MESA, AZ — Some junior high kids in Mesa turned their teacher's car into an art project that's now traveling all over the Valley.
Carson Junior High School teacher Michael De Alba said he wanted to make an "extremely awesome" memory for his students because 2020 has been a difficult year.
The 7th and 8th graders spent weeks transforming his white Jeep Cherokee. De Alba is proud of their crazy, colorful result.
De Alba said he did ask his principal and his wife for permission before starting the art car project. He now drives it everywhere he goes, and he said admirers are surprised the artwork is from junior high students.
"If you give them the trust and you give them the materials and time to play, they can do some awesome stuff," De Alba said.
Hoping to make this an annual project, De Alba started a GoFundMe account. He wants to buy a new car, let students paint it, and donate the final product to a family in need.
