MESA, AZ — A Mesa couple is stepping up to help Valley families who rely on school lunches.
"There's other people helping but you can never do too much", says Emma Gonzalez who lives in Mesa.
Emma and her husband Jovan were inspired to help others after hearing the news of school closures Sunday night.
Jovan says, "When I was in school I would depend on those meals and I know a lot of other families depend on those meals."
Over half of the nearly 60,000 students in the Mesa Unified School District are eligible for free or reduced meals.
So, the Gonzalez's are collecting non-perishable food items to fill any potential gaps in meal availability. They plan on distributing the individually packaged food items around Stapley Rd. and Broadway Rd. in Mesa.
"Right now we're just trying to do as much as possible for as long as possible," added Emma.
If you're interested in helping, the Gonzales' set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to purchase food items.
