A groundbreaking ceremony for the light rail extension took place today.
Valley Metro and City of Mesa hosted the event along with a fall festival at Stapley Drive and Main Street in celebration.
"By breaking ground on the Gilbert Road Extension, we continue to build our Next Mesa," said Mesa Mayor John Giles.
The extension will expand rail service an extra 1.9 miles on Main Street from Mesa Drive to Gilbert Road.
It is expected to be ready for use in late 2018 or early 2019.
