MESA, AZ — The suspect who was shot and killed by police is being identified.

Authorities with the Mesa Police Department say on Wednesday morning 31-year-old Craig Dandy was shot by officers after he rushed at them while holding two knives.

It started when officers were called to an apartment complex near Dobson Road and Southern Avenue for reports of a man with a knife yelling “take their best shot.”

When officers arrived they walked toward Dandy’s last known location and were confronted by him as he held two knives, according to police.

Mesa PD officials say one officer fired his duty weapon while another discharged his less lethal shotgun.

Witnesses observed Dandy charge at the officers prior to the shooting. No officers were hurt.

Police say the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and a knife was recovered.

Investigators will be reviewing body camera footage from the incident and the investigation continues.
