MESA, AZ — Police are investigating after a 2-year-old girl died after being found unresponsive at a Mesa apartment complex Tuesday night.

Emergency crews were called to The Moorings Apartments near Mesa Drive and Brown Road around 8:30 p.m., according to Mesa firefighters.

Officers on scene were told by an adult in the apartment that the girl fell and hit her head earlier in the day. Two hours after the toddler went to bed, the adult checked on her and found the little girl unresponsive, according to Mesa Police Detective Jason Flam.

Firefighters performed CPR on the child, but she never regained consciousness. The child was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where she later died, Flam said.

"At this point, I don't have any information indicating suspicious circumstances were involved," said Flam.
