MESA, AZ — One person is dead after a shooting involving Mesa police officers near Stapley Drive and Southern Avenue.
Emergency crews were called to the area of 9th Drive and Solomon at around 5 p.m. after receiving reports of a man trying to kill himself.
The man's adult child called police, saying the man had a hose connected to the tailpipe of a running vehicle that filtered into the vehicle.
Police say the child detached the hose and the man exited the vehicle.
When police arrived at the home, the man refused to speak to police and brandished a large knife, walking toward officers. Police say that is when the officer-involved shooting occurred.
Officials attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Police say no officers were injured during this incident.
Details of what led up to the shooting haven't been released.
Mesa police identified the man Saturday as 46-year-old Thomas McGinty.
