MESA, AZ — Mesa police say one person is dead after a fiery crash Monday morning.

The wreck happened before 6 a.m. in the area of Val Vista Drive and Brown Road.

Police say one vehicle hit another, causing a large fire.

An off-duty officer reportedly came upon the crash and tried to help, but was unable to get the driver out because the car was fully engulfed in flames.

The person in the burning vehicle that was hit was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are not yet able to identify whether the victim was a man or woman because the burns are so severe.

A second person was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries and a third person was treated at the scene.

Officials say impairment may be a factor in the crash, but they are still investigating.

The intersection was shut down for several hours for the investigation.
