MESA, AZ — A six-year-old boy has died after being struck by a semi-trailer as the driver turned at a Mesa intersection.

Mesa Police Detective Nick Rasheta said officers responded to the scene at Power Road and Jensen Street Monday afternoon.

According to Rasheta, six-year-old Holden Gardner was standing with a family member at the corner of the intersection when the semi-truck turned and the back end of the vehicle went onto the curb, hitting Gardner.

Gardner was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and did not survive.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, Rasheta said.

Mesa Public Schools says Gardner attended Falcon Hill Elementary and released the following statement:

"The Mesa Public Schools family is saddened by the tragic death of an elementary school student this afternoon in a traffic accident," the district said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the child’s family and friends. The district will be providing additional counseling support tomorrow and for as long as needed by the school community."

If you'd like to help, family of Gardner says they set up a Gofundme to help assist with funeral costs.
