MESA, AZ — A motorcyclist has died following a hit-and-run crash involving a vehicle in Mesa on Sunday evening.
The incident was reported at the intersection of Val Vista Drive and Southern Avenue around 8 p.m.
Mesa police say the driver who hit the motorcyclist left the scene but he returned two hours later. That driver was then arrested.
Police say the driver showed signs of impairment and he was charged with hit-and-run and DUI.
The driver has since been identified as 30-year-old Aaron Powell.
Court paperwork says Powell admitted to smoking meth after the crash.
His mother allegedly convinced him to return to the scene.
The motorcyclist, a 53-year-old man, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Powell is being held on a $100,000 bond for manslaughter and driving on a suspended license.
